Malawi. From dusk till dawn
Since I arrived in Malawi all my electronic devices refused to grant me with a daily benefit of accurate time reading.
In the beginning I didn’t really notice
anything suspicious and I did not dare to question the numbers on screens. With
the days gone by it turned out that I’ve been causing a significant confusion
not only in my daily schedule but also in schedules of the fellow travellers.
I’d be showing up for dinner an hour early,
expecting the sunrise when the sun was still asleep, I’d be surprised because of
the unusual time of the sunset, and I’d be proudly saying good night armed with a plausible
cause of being there wide and awake till 10pm (which is around midnight
Malawian time). Only in the morning I’d discover that it has been collectively
decided that I’d not be informed that I actually went to bed at 8pm and
everyone already developed a healthy dosage of doubt when I’m giving away the statements
about time.
It's not really about the measures of time. It’s about what happens from dusk
till dawn. Between mountains and valley. Between lake and the shore. Between
power shortages and reality unplugged. Between musicians and audience.
I’ve spent my inaccurate time in
eco camps on the mountainous and lake shore edges of the Rift Valley – Mushroom Farm
and Butterfly Space. Do read about their community and voluntary projects. Behind
the American Dreamy hashtags (#organic,
#permaculture, #compost toilets, #eco, #outdoor showers, #solar power, you name
it) you’ll find heart warming stories about people who are trying to make it in
the big wide world - be a soccer players, rock stars, doctors, teachers, tour
operators, politicians. Those who are simply trying to make it in the small
world within their reach and those who are trying to help.
At the end of the day you’ll all have
a beer and play pool chatting about nothing in particular and watch some Malawi
Lake Shore Sunset TV. Look, those kids do not even speak one language and they
seem to have so much in common. They certainly are having so much fun.
After dark there will be music
and some jamming. Everyone here is a great musician. You’ll be one too. Listen
in, there are some great tunes here:
Soon enough you’ll go to sleep.
Your time, Anna’s time or Malawi time.
Love your blog, great photos & tunes! Look forward to your next post x Emma
